The Order of the Dragon (Societas Draconistarum) was a monarchical, chivalric order founded in 1408 by Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund and his wife, Barbara of Cilli. It was designed to defend Christian Europe, particularly against Ottoman expansion, and to protect the royal family's interests. Members wore a dragon insignia, which inspired the moniker "Dracul" for Vlad II.

Key Aspects of the Order of the Dragon:

Foundation: Established in 1408, modeled after Crusader military orders to protect the faith.

Symbolism: Members wore a medallion featuring a dragon with its tail wrapped around its neck, or an ouroboros (dragon biting its own tail). This symbolized the triumph of Christ over evil, as well as the duty of the knights.

Goal: Primarily to protect the kingdom from the Ottoman Empire, but it also functioned to consolidate power for Emperor Sigismund in Hungary and the surrounding regions.

Membership: Comprised of high-ranking nobles, kings, and lords. Notably, Vlad II Dracul (father of Vlad the Impaler) was a member, with his name being derived from his membership in this order.

Evolution: The order was most influential in the early 15th century and, after 1453, it continued to play a role in Eastern European resistance against the Ottoman Empire.
