Anonymous is a decentralized, leaderless international hacktivist collective founded in 2003 on 4chan, originating from user-driven imageboard, trolling, and "raid" culture. Evolving into a politically motivated group by 2007, it uses cyber-attacks (DDoS, doxing) to target governments, corporations, and organizations, adopting the Guy Fawkes mask as a symbol of anti-censorship and free speech.

Key historical developments and actions include:

Origins (2003–2006): Emerged from 4chan’s /b/ board where "Anonymous" was the default username for users conducting chaotic online "raids" and trolling.

Shift to Activism (2007–2008): Following media criticism, the group adopted a political stance, with "Project Chanology" (2008) against the Church of Scientology marking a shift toward organized, anti-censorship activism.

Major Operations: Conducted "Operation Payback" (2010) against Visa/Mastercard for freezing WikiLeaks donations, and supported Arab Spring protests.

Structure and Decline: Known as a "hive mind" or "global brain" with no central leadership, the group saw reduced activity following FBI arrests of key figures in 2011–2012, including splinter group LulzSec.

Reemergence: The group has resurfaced periodically, notably in 2020 to support Black Lives Matter, and later, for various geopolitical actions.
