Atlantis is a legendary, advanced island nation first described by the Greek philosopher Plato around 360 B.C. as a powerful naval empire that sank into the Atlantic Ocean after falling out of divine favor. Appearing in his dialogues Timaeus and Critias, it serves as an allegory for hubris and a warning against overambition.

Origin: Described by Plato, who claimed to have heard the story from Solon, who learned it from Egyptian priests.


Location: Situated west of the "Pillars of Hercules" (Straits of Gibraltar).


Description: A prosperous, technologically, and militarily superior civilization arranged in concentric circles of water and land.


Downfall: Following an failed attempt to invade Athens, the island was destroyed by catastrophes sent by the gods and submerged into the sea.
