Project MKUltra, or MK-Ultra, was a top-secret, illegal human experimentation program run by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) from 1953 until approximately 1973. The program sought to develop techniques for mind control, behavioral modification, and interrogation, often by testing drugs like LSD and other psychological, physical, and chemical methods on unwitting, non-consensual subjects. Key details about MKUltra include:
Purpose: Initiated during the Cold War in response to perceived Soviet, Chinese, and North Korean use of "brainwashing" on U.S. prisoners of war, the CIA aimed to develop its own methods for interrogation and "mind control".
Methods: Experiments involved administering high doses of LSD, barbiturates, amphetamines, and other psychoactive substances; sensory deprivation; hypnosis; electroshock therapy; and verbal/sexual abuse.
Unwitting Subjects: Experiments were conducted on American and Canadian citizens, including patients in mental hospitals, prisoners, drug addicts, and sex workers—people considered unable to fight back. Some subjects were even military personnel and CIA employees.
Scope: Activities were carried out at more than 80 institutions, including universities, hospitals, and prisons, often using front organizations to hide CIA involvement.
