Needle Depth

Proper tattoo needle depth, targeting the upper dermis (roughly 1.5–2mm deep), is essential to avoid blowouts or fading. Key tips include setting a 2.5-3mm needle hang, maintaining consistent, light pressure, using proper skin tension, and "floating" the needle tip just above the skin surface for better visibility.
Key Tattoo Needle Depth Tips
Target the Dermis: Aim for the upper dermis layer, about 1.5–2mm deep. If you go too shallow, the ink will fall out; too deep, and it causes blowouts.
Set Proper Needle Hang: Set your needle exposure (hang) to 2.5mm–3mm. This allows you to see the tip of the needle and helps you judge your depth better.
"Float" the Needle: Instead of resting the plastic tube directly on the skin (riding the tube), "float" the needle by keeping the tip of the machine just slightly above the skin surface for better control.
Stretch the Skin: Use your free hand to create a firm, consistent stretch on the skin. A weak stretch makes it difficult to achieve consistent depth and results in inconsistent lines.
