The Philadelphia Experiment is a widely debunked conspiracy theory alleging that the U.S. Navy rendered the destroyer USS Eldridge invisible—or teleported it—from Philadelphia to Norfolk, Virginia, in October 1943. Originating from 1950s letters by Carl M. Allen, it claimed to test Einstein’s unified field theory. The Navy denies the event, and evidence suggests a hoax rooted in misidentified degaussing tests.
Key Aspects of the Legend
The Goal: The purported goal was to render warships invisible to enemy radar and vision.
The Incidents: Stories allege the USS Eldridge was shrouded in green fog and vanished on two occasions in 1943.
The Consequences: Legends claim crew members suffered horrific, supernatural effects, such as being fused into the ship's metal, going insane, or disappearing.
Origin: The tale was largely promoted by Carl M. Allen (using the alias "Carlos Miguel Allende"), who sent letters to UFO researcher Morris K. Jessup in the 1950s.
