The Wagner Group (officially known as PMC Wagner) is a Russian state-funded private military company (PMC) and network of mercenary entities that functions as a proxy for the Russian government, allowing Moscow to project power abroad with plausible deniability. The group, which first emerged in 2014, has played a significant role in conflicts in Ukraine, Syria, and across several African nations, often operating alongside or in place of regular Russian armed forces.

Key Aspects and History

Founder and Leadership: The group was founded in 2014 by Dmitry Utkin, a former special forces officer in Russia's military intelligence agency (GRU). It was owned and financed by Yevgeny Prigozhin, a wealthy businessman known as "Putin's chef" due to his catering ties to the Kremlin. Following a failed mutiny in June 2023, Prigozhin and Utkin died in a plane crash in August 2023.

Legal Status: Private military companies are technically illegal under Russian law, but the Wagner Group operates in a gray zone, with the Kremlin providing funding, equipment, and training facilities (specifically in Molkino, Krasnodar Krai).

Role in Ukraine: Wagner mercenaries first appeared during the 2014 annexation of Crimea. They were heavily involved in the 2022-2023 invasion of Ukraine, playing a key role in the capture of Bakhmut and recruiting heavily from Russian prisons.
